It's that time of year again
Fall is the perfect season for indulging in more self-care and jumping back into a routine facial series. As summer winds down and the temperature drops, we become less exposed to the harsh rays of the summer sun. However, we should try and make time to care for ourselves, especially our skin. Now is the time to implement an improved skincare routine and repair any damage we might have accumulated over the summer! (We hope you reapplied your SPF 30+).
You might have heard of the term "Peel Season." Well, that season is happening right now. If you are unsure of this, keep reading to learn more.
It's "Chemical" Peel Season! These treatments are best done in series and post-summer, when the sun isn't as harsh and when we aren't laying on a beach, sipping on a nice fruity beverage - though don't we wish we still were?!
Chemical peels have been around for centuries and today are still one of the most sought-after treatments. What makes them so popular is their ability to treat many skincare concerns, including fine lines + wrinkles, acne, congestion, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. They work by seeping underneath the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and dissolving the glue-like substance that holds dead skin to fresh skin, thus encouraging cellular turnover.
Not all peels are the same. They can range from mild to deep. Medium/deep chemical peels encourage the skin to peel physically, and you will see skin shedding a few days up to a week after treatment. It is best when having this type of peel to leave the skin alone and not pick or peel any shedding skin. Instead, trim the dead skin with a clean pair of scissors. Peeling any skin that is not ready to shed may result in skin damage. Some might opt for the less high maintenance of aftercare with a more superficial or mild peel. These peels will lightly exfoliate the skin and will not cause such a dramatic shedding of the dead skin layers. (No snakeskin here!) However, just because you won't notice the skin's shedding process doesn't mean you won't see great results! Remember, it is best to avoid sun exposure after any treatment and wear a minimum of SPF 30.
Let's take a closer look at the different types of ingredients found in many chemical peels:
Lactic acid – helps with hydration
Glycolic acid – targets fine lines + wrinkles, photoaging
Salicylic acid – aids in congestion + unclogging pores
Kojic acid – targets hyperpigmentation + dark spots
Mandelic acid – aids with uneven skin tone, congestion, + skin texture
Chemical peels can be great on their own or added with another facial service. And as we're starting to break out our cozy sweaters, put on our cute knee-high boots, and drink delicious pumpkin spice lattes, it's a great time to book a professional treatment at Sacred Spa + Wellness for a chemical peel!
