Chromotherapy: Skin and the Visible Light Spectrum
Chromotherapy and Skincare
Chromotherapy is an alternative medicine practice that uses the visible light spectrum to improve different conditions. LED light therapy has become a modern application of Chromotherapy where different wavelengths of light penetrate the skin to create a physiological benefit. It's a unique energy-based treatment that has no downtime and few precautions. It can work synergistically with almost any service. Hydrafacial, dermaplaning, and laser treatments are just a few that pair well with LEDs. Additionally, the color chosen dictates the skin's benefit.
The Colors and their Benefits
Red light is one of the most commonly used colors because of its potent anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. The light signals down towards the dermis, which stimulates fibroblast activity, the cells that create collagen and elastin. It also promotes the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), which provides energy for muscle contraction. This means red light can also improve skin laxity and muscle atrophy.
Orange and yellow light have similar effects as red light, but they don't penetrate as deeply into the skin. They are oftentimes used in conjunction with red light to stimulate blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and promote glowing skin.
Green light is promising in treating skin discoloration, redness, and hyperpigmentation. It targets the melanocytes that reside in the basal layer of the epidermis and prevents them from producing excess pigment. Additionally, it breaks up the excess melanin already present on the skin's surface.
Aqua and blue light are both exceptional tools when treating acne. Since these colors work on the skin's surface and don't penetrate deeply, they can destroy the bacteria that aggravate the condition. Antibacterial blue light is commonly combined with anti-inflammatory red light to address the different pathologies of acne.
Light Therapy Everyday
There are a lot of options that can be implemented at home and the spa. While large units are reserved for professional use, handheld blue and red LED devices are commonly sold to assist in treating acne and the signs of age. Some products offer a more comprehensive array of colors. Adding light therapy to your homecare routine can be a great way to improve your skin without having to try out another serum or cream.
Chromotherapy + Infrared Sauna
When it comes to health and wellness, combination therapies typically yield better results than relying on one. Infrared saunas use long wavelengths of light outside the visible light spectrum that penetrate deep into the body, warming the muscles and living tissues. This promotes healing throughout the body, helps manage pain, improves blood flow, reduces inflammation, and increases collagen and elastin. Utilizing Chromotherapy during an infrared sauna session will use two modalities that can double down on a specific skin concern or address multiple at once.
